He exuded alpha male energy, and his training tactics seemed harsh. Part of me outrightly hated him in the beginning.
He becomes the one who is responsible for training Celeana and getting her to embrace her full potential. Yet another contender for who is the hottest man in the book, we get Prince Rowan of Maeve’s court. Venturing to this new land also means that we get to meet some wonderful new Fae characters. The journey to Dornalle introduces us to the Fae world that exists in this book. Facing her fears, Celeana steps into her role as queen and becomes even more powerful and dangerous than anyone could have imagined. She remains the same stubborn and snarky, badass warrior that I fell for initially, but now she contains this awe-inspiring fierceness to her.
While she grows stronger and wise, she never loses the qualities that still make her the character I love. Her transition from assassin to queen hinges upon her ability to accept herself, her true self. She killed people and has done other unspeakable task. She ran ways form her home and her people. She doesn’t see the honor in how she handled herself these past year. She feels that she needs to hide this part of herself. All of the sorrows and guilt she holds on to, what she’s done and the people she’s lost are weighing on her. Celeana’s inner darkness was acknowledged in the earlier two books, but here we see her confront it. We get the opportunity to learn how she became who she presently is. The events of her life that have brought her to this point-her family being murdered, trained to be an assassin-have strengthed her physically and mentally, but she still has wounds that she needs to heal. The parts of herself that she’s been so afraid to accept are the ones that she needs to embrace to win this fight.
I’m utterly amazed at how much she has grown as a character.
